Human-media convergence

how experiential media change perception and ways of knowing

Hi, I’m Mila, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Research Centre of Gameful Realities at Tampere University. My interest is in how media and media technologies increasingly embody engagement-oriented media logics, emphasising enmeshment, personalisation, and interactivity, together marking the experiential turn in media.

I explore this complex area through the necessary dissolution of disciplinary boundaries at the intersection of media and communication, human-computer interaction, and anticipatory futures research. My multidisciplinary background, along with the breadth of methodological expertise, allows me to integrate these traditions into a unique transdisciplinary perspective. My toolkit primarily includes laboratory experiments, anticipatory and speculative futures research methods, and surveys.

I have published in top-tier venues such as New Media & Society, Internet Research, and International Journal of Human-Computer Studies.

My motivation is in the urgency to critically understand and shape how emerging and future experiential media condition experience and what sociocultural implications these might hold. This involves identifying risks (e.g., surveillance and manipulation) and amplifying possibilities (e.g., empowerment and prosocial engagement).

My engagement around these topics is reflected through collaborations, supervision, and teaching, with particular interest in prosocial uses, promoting futures literacy, and resilience to technological disruptions.

Modes of interaction

How sensory, interactive, and social features of media shape experience. Technologies such as VR, haptics, biosensing, and generative AI enable new forms of engagement, while their effects are mediated by individual differences in context, motivation, and preference.

Self-media enmeshment

How media, self, and bodily experience become enmeshed. Features such as avatars, immersive environments, and bioadaptivity blur the boundaries and redefine agency, identity, and relationality.

Sociotechnical futures

How emerging media are anticipated, imagined, and evaluated before they are fully realised. Anticipatory methods make it possible to study expectations and uncertainties in a fast-paced technological landscape. This work engages with sociotechnical imaginaries and futures literacy to highlight how cultural narratives, policy visions, and everyday practices shape the development and adoption of experiential media.

Synthesis and frameworks

Developing integrative frameworks for understanding experiential media, such as conceptual groundwork, sociotechnical taxonomies, and ethical design principles. Provide grounds and tools that inform both critical scholarship and practical decision-making.
